Ivan:
I’m twelve years old and I live in Tomsk. I think it’s important to talk to your family. If you don’t tell them what you think or how you feel, how can they know? I’ve got three sisters and they’re great. They’re all clever and fun to be with. Sometimes, of course, they annoy me and then we shout at each other. That’s usually because I want to play my Roblox games and they bother me!
Alina:
I’m eleven and I’m from Ufa. I don’t have any brothers or sisters, so I spend a lot of time with my parents. I suppose my life at home is quite serious because of that. We get on well and they always listen to me and give me advice. I’m not lonely because I’ve got lots of friends too. I go to their houses all the time. I like them because they make me laugh.
Denis:
I’m thirteen and I’m Russian. I’ve got one brother – Robert. He’s a lot elder than me, but it isn’t a problem because we have a lot in common. We both love playing football and we watch football matches together. Robert is funny and tells me and my Mum and Dad great jokes. But he’s not always like that. I can tell him stuff about school and arguments with friends and he always listens to me.

A summer of volunteering
Seventeen-year-old Yana Novak talks about being a volunteer
Over the summer, I got the chance to take part in a volunteer programme. Ever since I was a small child, I’ve always loved animals, but we weren’t allowed to have pets when I was growing up. When I found out that I could work at a wildlife centre in Vancouver, Canada which rescues wild animals, I seized the opportunity. Vancouver is surrounded by nature. It has mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It was definitely the best possible place for me!
The centre itself looks after sick and injured wild animals. I didn’t realise this, but it is actually illegal for members of the public to care for them. The centre aims to help creatures like rabbits, deer and so on to get better so they can return to the wild. While I was staying there, one of the team brought in a baby bat whose mom had died. I’ve learned that they’re called pups! I learned to feed it with a bottle, being careful of its wings and making sure it didn’t bite me. As it grew, we taught it to catch insects and spiders. Once it was ready, we took it out of the city and back into the forest.
I spent every morning at the centre, preparing food, cleaning out cages, doing the washing up and generally helping out. By the end of each session, I was tired but happy. I got the bus back to my host family, had lunch with them and fell asleep for an hour or so. We generally had the afternoons off. When we weren’t hiking in the mountains or sailing around the port and islands, we were exploring the city. A couple of times, I asked if I could help overnight and that was so cool! Some of the animals such as the mice, bats and owls don’t sleep at night.
For other animal lovers out there, the application process is very easy, but the minimum age for this programme is seventeen and you need a B1 Intermediate level of English. I used an online agency which helped me with the visa, flights, travel insurance and all the other details. You need to write a letter where you explain why you’re the perfect candidate! I’ve wanted to work somewhere like this ever since I was young, so that part was easy for me. I’ve also taken up wildlife photography, so I included that in too.

In 1992, a ship travelling from China to the US was hit by a 48 MTRSO in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Its cargo of containers was washed overboard and at least one of them split 49 PNOE. The container held around 29,000 yellow plastic ducks as well as plastic frogs and turtles. The toys floated out into the water and have been travelling across the oceans ever since.
It isn’t unusual for things from ships to get lost in the sea. Every year, as many as 10,000 containers fall into the ocean, spilling out everything from 50 SSPRTO shoes to plastic bricks. These objects have already done harm to both our seas and our wildlife, and if the accidents don’t stop, the situation will get worse. However, in the case of the floating ducks, something 51 STPVIIEO has happened.
Scientists know that the direction in which water moves in our seas and oceans affects our 52 LMTCIAE. Dr Ebbesmeyer, a scientist in the US, realised that observing the ducks as they float around the world can help us 53 DNRSNDTUEA how ocean currents work. In order to collect information, he began to track the ducks’ progress.
It seems that after travelling together for some time, the ducks went in different directions. Many of them floated south to the shores of Indonesia, Australia and South America. Meanwhile, the rest headed north into the Arctic Ocean, becoming trapped in 54 CIE until the winds and the movement of the 55 TEWRA sent them over 3,000 kms to the North Pole.

Задание 16. mention that one of the species is likely to become extinct as a result of chemical pollution?
THEY NEED SAVING TOO
A Think of an endangered species. What comes to mind? The giant panda, the blue whale, the snow leopard? And what do these creatures all have in common? They’re known as ‘charismatic megafauna’, in other words, large species of animals which appeal to a lot of people. It’s no accident that the symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature is a giant panda. These animals are cute or beautiful, or both, and of course we all want to save them. This popularity enables organisations such as the WWF to raise much-needed money to support a range of critically endangered species and protect their habitats. However, less well-known or ‘exciting’ creatures are far more likely to actually become extinct because they don’t get enough attention from researchers. Invertebrates (animals without a backbone) make up over ninety percent of all the creatures on Earth, but get only a tiny percentage of the money available to protect our wildlife because people just don’t connect to them in the way that they do to a tiger or an elephant.
B And what about those creatures that many people would find positively ugly? The Ugly Animal Preservation Society’s mascot is the blob fish, voted the world’s ugliest animal. With its tiny eyes, big mouth and slimy pink body it’s far from attractive. This marine creature lives deep in the ocean, where the pressure is very high. As a result, it has tiny fins and no skeleton, which keeps it from being crushed by the water pressure. Unfortunately, when fishing boats sweep the ocean floor, looking for other fish and crustaceans, these fish can get swept into the nets accidentally, which is causing their numbers to drop.
C The California condor is another accidental victim of human activity. These huge birds with bald heads and big beaks weigh up to fourteen kilos, have a wingspan of up to two metres and can live as long as sixty years. They play an important role in the ecosystem by feeding on dead animals, thus preventing the spread of disease. Reintroduced into the wild after becoming extinct, other than in captivity, they are now under threat once more because of chemical pesticides introduced into the food chain and lead poisoning from the ammunition used to kill the animals they feed on.
D The threat faced by the pangolin, however, is far from accidental. They are more often targeted by poachers than any other animal in the world. Unique among mammals, it is covered in scales, like a reptile. They may not look very cuddly or cute, but these scales are highly prized in traditional Chinese medicine, which has caused the population of pangolins in China to fall by up to ninety-nine percent since the 1960s. However, there is no research evidence that the medicine actually has a beneficial effect. Pangolins are a type of anteater. They have no teeth, but their claws are strong enough to dig through concrete. Their name in Cantonese means ‘the animal that digs through the mountain’. They are easy to catch because when threatened they roll up into a ball. Their scales protect them from their natural predators, which cannot bite them, but it’s simple for a poacher to just pick them up.
E Other creatures become endangered precisely because people find them ugly. Take the aye aye for example. Found only on the island of Madagascar, the aye aye is the world’s largest nocturnal primate. During the day they sleep in nests in the trees, coming out to hunt at night. They are solitary creatures, furry, but strange looking, with big eyes, large ears and long, thin, pointed fingers. The middle finger is particularly thin and they use it to gently knock on trees. Then they reach into the tree and pull out any insects that respond to the knocking. Unfortunately, the way they look means that they are traditionally considered an omen of bad luck. Some people even believe that if they point that thin middle finger at someone, they will die. As a result, they are often killed, even though, like many endangered species, they are now protected by law.

How Mount Rushmore was built
In the Black Hills region of South Dakota, four stony-faced presidents gaze out from Mount Rushmore. This national monument depicts George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, representing the US’ birth, growth, development and preservation respectively. Not only do these sculptures embody these themes of past events, they also encourage tourism, with nearly 3 million people visiting the mountain’s mighty features each year. The idea for Mount Rushmore came from South Dakota 25 taste historian Doane Robinson.
The project was no easy endeavour, as it required 400 workers to complete. Because construction began in 1927 and continued through the Great Depression, when unemployment levels were extremely high, many of the workers were desperate for any job available, including this high-risk and strenuous task. Some reported being scared of heights, but agreed to hang over the 153-metre drop to 26 rescue a job.
The largest of the stone heads is George Washington’s, measuring 18.3 metres tall with a hefty 6.4-metre-long 27 ones. Each of his eyes is 3.4 metres wide. To create depth in the eyes, the pupils have holes carved deep enough that there are always shadows cast inside.
Not everyone views Mount Rushmore’s contemporary 28 reaction as a positive contribution, however. The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota Sioux, the tribe who had their land taken from them by the US government in the late-19th century. 29 glare portions of the mountain were removed and cut into to form the 30 cafes, and many see it as the desecration of a spiritual site.

LONDON’S FROST FAIRS
During the period between approximately 1300 and 1850, temperatures were 0 SIGNIFICANTLY (SIGNIFICANT) lower than they are nowadays. During this ‘Little Ice Age’, London’s River Thames would sometimes become totally 31 (FREEZE) so that Londoners could actually walk on the ice. This was by no means an annual event, occurring only 32 (EXCEPTION) in cold winters. London was a major port, and so the fact that boats could no longer use the river was 33 (HARM) to the local economy. However, because the ice was thick enough to walk on, it meant that festivals could be held on the river. There were some who argued that it was 34 (RESPONSIBLE) to hold an event on ice as there was a danger of people falling over. However, these ‘frost fairs’, something between a Christmas market and a dance party, were extremely popular and highly 35 (BENEFIT) to London’s business people. Food and drink were sold, and the 36 (ENTERTAIN), such as jugglers, musicians and magicians, were able to keep the crowds amused. According to the 37 (SELECT) of historical records which gave detailed descriptions of the festival, there was a 38 (THRILL) range of activities on the ice, from sledging to bowling. In the 1814 frost fair, an elephant was even brought onto the ice.
